Denis Hayes is an environmentalist and a long-time champion of solar & renewable energy. He rose to prominence in 1970 as the coordinator for the first Earth Day. He subsequently founded the Earth Day Network and expanded the event to 180 nations. Earth Day is now the most widely observed secular holiday in the world.

During the Carter Administration, Hayes was director of the federal Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Hayes became an adjunct professor of engineering at Stanford University for several years, and also practiced law in Silicon Valley. Since 1992, Hayes has been president of the Bullitt Foundation in Washington and continues to be a leader in environmental and energy policy. He was the principal developer of the Bullitt Center, judged by World Architecture Magazine to be "the greenest office building in the world."

Hayes has also served as Executive director of Environmental Action, Director of the Illinois State Energy Office, Visiting Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Fellow of the Worldwatch Institute, Fellow at the Bellagio Center, and Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow of the Bosch Foundation.

Hayes has received the national Jefferson Awards Medal for Outstanding Public Service as well as numerous other awards. Time Magazine named him as "Hero of the Planet" in 1999; the NYT profiled him as its Newsmaker of the Day; and Life Magazine selected him as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century. His newest book, COWED: The Hidden Impact of 93 Million Cows on America's Health, Economy, Politics, Culture, and Environment, was published by W.W. Norton in 2015.

Geneva Wiki Bio:

Geneva Wiki is a Citizen of the Yurok Tribe of northern California and brings extensive leadership experience in Tribal government, education, and philanthropy in rural and Tribal communities. Geneva serves as a Senior Program Manager at The California Endowment, supporting community organizing efforts advancing health and racial equity throughout the State, and with a specific focus on community power building within California’s indigenous communities.

Previously, Geneva was the Executive Director of the Wild Rivers Community Foundation and served as the local Initiative Manager of the Del Norte and Tribal land’s Building Healthy Communities initiative. Wiki was also the Deputy Executive Director of the Yurok Tribe and Founding Director of a community-driven, non-profit charter high school on the reservation. Named one of America’s 37 Innovators under the age of 36 by the Smithsonian Magazine, Geneva was also recognized as a National Innovator by the US Department of State, High Country News, and a 40 Under 40 Native leader by Native Americans in Business and Enterprise.

Geneva is married to a Maori, an indigenous New Zealander, and previously lived in New Zealand, working as an Executive Designer with a human-centered design consultancy aimed at improving systems and policies to work better for people and the public good. While there, she was also appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Centre for Social Impact.

Wiki earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Washington, and a degree in planning, public policy, and management from the University of Oregon. She currently lives on the ancestral land of the Nisenan people outside of Sacramento with her spouse and three daughters.

Peter Stangel of Aiken, SC, joined the US Endowment in April 2010. An ecologist by training, Peter received a B.S. in Biology from Furman University and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. Previously, he was with National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, most recently as Director of Science and Evaluation. With the Foundation, he also served as Eastern and Southeastern Regional Director and Neotropical Migratory Bird Initiative Director. Peter has extensive experience building corporate conservation partnerships and has worked with Walmart, Shell Oil Company, ConocoPhillips, and Southern Company, among others. He has more than 20 publications in the technical literature and nearly 200 in the popular magazines.

His focus at Ivey Foundation is the Economy and Environment program, which provides funding to these net-zero focused organizations, among others. He also liaises with government, industry, ENGOs and the business community to ensure Canada achieves net-zero by 2050 while remaining economically competitive.

An engaging and lively spokesperson, Dr. Lourie has a unique ability to translate complex issues into timely and actionable information in both print and broadcast interviews alike and has been interviewed by most major Canadian news outlets. Dr. Lourie is also an experienced and in demand speaker, and has spoken at events such as Global Salmon Initiative’s COP26 Panel, The Trottier Symposium and the 2021 Calgary Climate Symposium, where he gave the keynote address.

She has served as a Trustee for the Sisters, Oregon based Roundhouse Foundation since 2014 and most recently stepped in as the organizations first Executive Director at a time of rapid growth for the Foundation.

The Roundhouse Foundation supports innovative problem solving and creative solutions in four programmatic areas including arts and culture, environmental stewardship, education and social services throughout rural and tribal communities in Oregon.

When she isn’t exploring Oregon’s unspoiled beauty, Erin enjoys spending time with her family, pets and reading.

M. Albin (Al) Jubitz, Jr. Bio:

Al has been active in the Portland nonprofit community for over 50 years, serving in multiple capacities on boards and in volunteer roles. Michael Mantell Bio:

Michael Mantell founded Resources Legacy Fund (RLF) and Resources Law Group (RLG) in 2000 to expand the work he had begun in partnership with the Packard Foundation and as a consulting lawyer in the late 1990s. Before consulting for the foundation, Michael was Undersecretary of the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) from 1991 to mid-1997. He was recruited to that position from his post as general counsel for the World Wildlife Fund. 

Prior to that, Michael had been a director of the Conservation Foundation and a deputy city attorney for the City of Los Angeles. Michael is known for innovating successful multi-stakeholder planning processes resulting in significant outcomes, particularly in the areas of natural resources conservation, urban open spaces, climate change, public funding, and engaging underserved communities. At CNRA, he saw the possibility to achieve greater outcomes by deploying simultaneous strategies to improve policy, refine regulations, acquire land and water rights, strengthen ocean protection, build capacity, and create networks but was stymied by tight budgets. Then he met Jeanne Sedgwick of the Packard Foundation.

John Esterle Bio:

John Esterle retired as Co-Executive Director of The Whitman Institute (TWI) in July 2022 when TWI, an independent foundation based in San Francisco, spent out all of its assets and ceased operations. TWI worked to advance social, political, and economic equity by funding dialogue, relationship building, and inclusive leadership. TWI also led in launching the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project in 2020, a five-year collaborative initiative to address the inherent power imbalances between foundations and nonprofits. 

John began his career at TWI in 1988 and became its Executive Director in 1998. He later led its transition from an operating to a grantmaking foundation and its decision to sunset the foundation. A past board president of Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement and the Rooftop PTA, he also served on The Germanacos Foundation, LeaderSpring, and Images and Voices of Hope boards. Currently, John is a board member of The Right Question Institute. Before joining TWI, his most notable job was directing a pilot project called Crime and the News Media, which featured a series of dialogues between journalists and advocates of alternatives to incarceration. 

John received his B.A. in Liberal Arts from the Hutchins School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Sonoma State University and an M.A. in Broadcast Communication Arts from San Francisco State University.

Tony DeFalco Bio:

Tony DeFalco joined Latino Network as the Executive Director in February 2021, where he and his team work to positively transform the lives of Latinx youth and families in education, leadership, and civic engagement in Oregon. He brings decades of experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, advocacy, and coalition-building across diverse regional and state sectors, coupled with a deep understanding of the issues facing Latinx and communities of color. His past experiences include working with Native American tribes nationwide to re-acquire culturally significant lands and working with a broad coalition of environmental groups, commercial and recreational fishing groups, and scientists to protect ocean health.

Prior to his role at Latino Network, DeFalco worked for Verde for ten years, partnering with the community to innovate anti-displacement, environmental protection, and economic development efforts.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies with a minor in Chicano Studies and a master’s in Natural Resources Planning from Humboldt State University.

Tony currently serves as the board chair of the Coalition of Communities of Color and was appointed by Governor Brown to the Urban Flood Safety & Water Quality District in 2019. Tony has served on numerous boards, including Earthjustice, Audubon Portland, and as a founding board member for the Center for Diversity and the Environment. 

Tony is a proud member of Cohort V of Latino Network’s UNIDOS leadership development program and also an American Leadership Forum of Oregon Fellow (Class 33).

Joel Clement Bio:

Joel Clement joined The Lemelson Foundation in 2023 as a Senior Program Officer. As an award-winning policy expert, scientist, and former federal executive, he brings to the Foundation more than 20 years of experience in the climate arena, including climate and energy policy, resilience and climate adaptation, and climate philanthropy.

Clement has led international climate initiatives, provided advice and analysis for White House leadership and two Interior Secretaries, developed and contributed to research and conservation science programs in temperate and tropical ecosystems worldwide, and established a leading conservation science program for a philanthropic foundation. As a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, he led international efforts to address climate disruption in the rapidly warming Arctic.

A native of Maine, Clement has received multiple awards for championing climate action and promoting the role of science in public policy. He has been featured and interviewed on CNN, MSNBC, PBS, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Democracy Now and published by the Washington Post, The Hill, Denver Post, The Guardian, NBCThink, and the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs. In addition to his full-time role at The Lemelson Foundation, Clement remains a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Belfer Center and is an Associate at the Stockholm Environment Institute.

Thomas Keown Bio:

Thomas founded Many Hopes after visiting East Africa for the first time in 2007, thinking, “If my friends back home could see what I’ve just seen, they would want to help. So, I’m going to show them.”

Born in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles,” he was educated at Queens University, Belfast, worked for one of the two Nobel prize-winning signatories of the Belfast Peace Agreement, and is a former columnist. His career has spanned the media, politics, and for-purpose missions in the UK, USA, Africa, and Latin America. His belief that seemingly intractable problems can be solved by bringing the right influences to bear on them stems from his Christian faith. He lives in New York City with his wife and three-legged dog, serves as an elder at Church of the City, and travels extensively speaking on justice issues.

Margi Hoffmann Bio:

Margaret Hoffmann: state director for USDA Rural Development, serving the State of Oregon.

Margaret, or Margi Hoffmann, grew up on a small family farm outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, a small community located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Hoffmann left Colorado and moved to Portland, Oregon, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.

Hoffmann's professional career began working in natural resources management on federal lands. She has worked on public policy in the realms of public safety, health care, climate change, energy resilience and security, and land use. She has experience working for the public and private sector, as well as in nonprofit management.

In 2012 and 2015, Oregon Governor's John Kitzhaber and Kate Brown, respectively, appointed Hoffmann to serve as Energy Policy Advisor. In this position, Hoffmann developed the first-ever 10-Year Energy Action Plan for the State of Oregon and served as the Governor's office liaison to the Oregon Public Utility Commission and Oregon Department of Energy. In addition, she served as liaison to the Pacific Coast Collaborative, a partnership between the States of California, Oregon and Washington, and the Province of British Columbia. In 2022, her work served to assist in the development of a shared Statement of Collaboration to address climate change adaptation and mitigation for the world's fifth-largest economy.

After leaving the Governor's office, Hoffmann served as a senior management team member for the Farmers Conservation Alliance, a non-profit focused on modernizing irrigation infrastructure in the Western United States to benefit agricultural security and the environment. During Hoffmann's tenure, the Alliance's irrigation modernization program grew from the pilot stage to implementation across five western states and created a $1B pipeline of shovel ready irrigation modernization projects.

In January 2022, Hoffmann received a Presidential appointment to continue public service as a state director for USDA Rural Development, serving the State of Oregon. She currently lives in Bend with the love of her life, Joshua Klaus, and their 4-year-old daughter, Liesl.

Tony DeFalco Bio:

Tony DeFalco joined Latino Network as the Executive Director in February 2021, where he and his team work to positively transform the lives of Latinx youth and families in education, leadership, and civic engagement in Oregon. He brings decades of experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, advocacy, and coalition-building across diverse regional and state sectors, coupled with a deep understanding of the issues facing Latinx and communities of color. His past experiences include working with Native American tribes nationwide to re-acquire culturally significant lands and working with a broad coalition of environmental groups, commercial and recreational fishing groups, and scientists to protect ocean health.

Prior to his role at Latino Network, DeFalco worked for Verde for ten years, partnering with the community to innovate anti-displacement, environmental protection, and economic development efforts.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies with a minor in Chicano Studies and a master’s in Natural Resources Planning from Humboldt State University.

Tony currently serves as the board chair of the Coalition of Communities of Color and was appointed by Governor Brown to the Urban Flood Safety & Water Quality District in 2019. Tony has served on numerous boards, including Earthjustice, Audubon Portland, and as a founding board member for the Center for Diversity and the Environment. 

Tony is a proud member of Cohort V of Latino Network’s UNIDOS leadership development program and also an American Leadership Forum of Oregon Fellow (Class 33).

Linda Whitlow Bio:

Linda Whitlow is the Founder and CEO of Cancer Survivor Resources, an organization born from her journey and an unwavering commitment to supporting cancer survivors. In 2001, Linda faced the initial challenge of Stage 0 breast cancer, undergoing a lumpectomy followed by eight weeks of daily radiation. Little did she know that a decade later, she would confront Stage 3 cancer in the same breast, leading to a mastectomy and a unique reconstructive process utilizing stomach muscles.

Motivated by her personal experiences, Linda founded Cancer Survivor Resources with a dual mission. Firstly, she aspires to empower survivors with the knowledge and resources needed to address the questions that arise during and after cancer treatment. Secondly, recognizing the financial strains that often accompany a cancer diagnosis, Linda is dedicated to connecting survivors with agencies that can assist with essential needs such as utilities, food, and childcare.

Vu is a founding board member of Community-Centric Fundraising, a movement that aims to ground fundraising practices in racial equity and social justice. Vu was born in Vietnam. He and his family came to the US when Vu was eight. He spent several years in Seattle, attending elementary and middle school, before moving to Memphis, Tennessee for high school and St. Louis for college and graduate school. He has a BA in Psychology and a Masters in Social work. He is a vegan, a father of two kids (ages ten and seven), and a staunch defender of the Oxford Comma.

Fred Ackerman-Munson Bio:

Fred has spent the last 20 years as Executive Director of the 444S Foundation in Bellevue, WA. During that time the Foundation has granted over $50 million to organizations working to protect wildlands and wildlife in Western North America. 

For 7 years prior to that Fred was Deputy Director of Conservation Northwest where he led The Cascades Conservation Partnership and Loomis Forest Campaigns that together raised over $100 million dollars to purchase and protect over 70,000 acres of forest in Washington’s Cascades Mountains. 

During that same time Fred also consulted on campaign design, grantmaking and evaluation for numerous foundations including Pew, Oak, Brainerd and Ploughshares. For 12 years before that, Fred was Regional Campaign Director for Greenpeace, where he researched, developed, and implemented numerous successful campaigns on solid and toxic waste, energy, and fisheries issues. Fred has 4 kids in college and lives with the love of his life on a small horse farm in Damascus, Oregon.

David Secord Bio:

After 20 years in foundation and university leadership jobs, David established Barnacle Strategies as an independent consulting and volunteering platform. From a home base on an island in BC, David works with partners in Canada, the United States, and sometimes farther afield. 

David enjoys variety, so at a given time, consulting clients might include foundations and funder affinity groups, partnership-oriented academic and research institutions, Indigenous people's organizations, and big or small NGOs. Projects and advising tend toward the creative and relevant, often integrating environmental, socioeconomic, and biocultural strategies - especially place-based ones. 

David also helps organizations recruit outstanding talent by managing executive searches and keeping fresh by serving on several volunteer boards.

She has guided clients to achieve unprecedented successes: the largest contribution ever to an arts organization in central Ohio; consistent increases in annual fund revenue for a women’s fund; an innovative digital giving strategy for a conservation organization; a reinvigorated board for a literary society.

Laura is constantly curious about trends in fundraising and philanthropy and an astute storyteller. She is a frequent speaker at local, regional, and national conferences (AFP, AAM, AMDA, Fundraising Bootcamp, etc.) and has addressed hundreds of nonprofit boards. Her articles related to advancement and philanthropy have appeared in Advancing Philanthropy, Nonprofit Quarterly, and other professional publications. A past chair of the Giving USA Foundation, she contributes to Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy, the seminal study of the sources and uses of charitable giving in the United States, and is consulted widely by publications such as The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, Penta Barron’s, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy. She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and was named her chapter’s “Fundraising Professional of the Year” in 2007.

She has served as a Trustee for the Sisters, Oregon based Roundhouse Foundation since 2014 and most recently stepped in as the organizations first Executive Director at a time of rapid growth for the Foundation.

The Roundhouse Foundation supports innovative problem solving and creative solutions in four programmatic areas including arts and culture, environmental stewardship, education and social services throughout rural and tribal communities in Oregon.

When she isn’t exploring Oregon’s unspoiled beauty, Erin enjoys spending time with her family, pets and reading.

Dana Okano Bio:

Dana Okano, PhD, AICP, (she/her) is Director of the Natural Environment sector at Hawai‘i Community Foundation, and is responsible for programs such as the Hawai‘i Fresh Water Initiative, Holomua Marine Initiative, and co-chairs the Hawai‘i Environmental Funders Group.  She is also Director of the EPA-funded Hawaiian Islands Environmental Finance Center, providing Technical Assistance to communities across Hawai‘i for their water needs.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Dr. Okano worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coral Reef Conservation Program and Coastal Zone Management Program in Saipan, CNMI.  Dr. Okano also previously worked as a Planner at County of Hawai‘i Planning Department, and she began her career as a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Benin, West Africa.

Lee Crockett Bio:

As executive director of the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF), Lee is responsible for designing and implementing programmatic and grantmaking strategies, managing SCF’s grantmaking portfolio and staff, forming strategic partnerships with NGOs and other funders, fundraising, ensuring strong operations and governance, and representing the SCF to governments, NGOs, philanthropists, and the public.

Prior to joining the SCF, Lee spent 20 years working on fisheries management at the state, interstate, federal, and international levels with both the US. Government and the non-profit sector. Most recently, he was the Director of U.S. Oceans for The Pew Charitable Trusts where he led Pew’s efforts to establish policies to end overfishing and promote ecosystem-based fisheries management. 

Before joining Pew, Crockett was executive director of the Marine Fish Conservation Network, the largest U.S. coalition dedicated to promoting the sustainable management of ocean fish. Prior to that, he was a fishery biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service, leading agency efforts to protect essential fish habitat. He also served as a staff member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries.

Crockett holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in biological oceanography from the University of Connecticut.
