George looked out for him for the one year when their camper experiences overlapped, and Caleb jumped in with both feet and quickly developed a reputation as a boy of substance, destined to be a man of substance.

He and Gregg Goss earned their Wolf's Paw awards in their Den summer. Wayne King, who was Tripmaster, fondly remembers a night hike together up Mount Cardigan as part of that process.

Caleb almost skipped his Den year because he felt he had accomplished all that he had set out to do by the end of Panther. Fortunately, Phil Hart interceded, suggesting that he could go for the prestigious Wolf's Paw. Caleb was so glad that Phil had talked him into returning.

Today he serves on the Holt-Elwell Foundation Board of Directors and helps steer Mowglis' future from that vantage point. He also developed a fondness for Colonel John Hill who was a loyal member of the Mowglis family and would spend a week or two every summer.

Caleb understands the importance of stories and tradition and in his business he helps long-standing family businesses to tell their stories. His family business is over 190 years old so he understands.

An unbounded curiosity and enthusiasm for life are the hallmarks of his life, and Mowglis was a big part of helping him develop those traits.

Shortly after we recorded this podcast we received the sad news of Caleb's father, George's passing. Giving New Meaning to the phrase "Paying it Forward" in the spirit of Mowglis.

Everyone who has set foot on the Mowglis grounds in the past 50 years knows that the Hart family has a storied history at Mowglis. The "modern" era of Mowglis was ushered in by James' grandfather William Baird Hart Sr. after the formation of the Holt-Elwell Memorial Foundation, Conceived and advocated by Joe Beckford and implemented by giants like Tyson Stokes, US Senator John Hines, Mrs. Helen Elwell, Bill MacDonald, and others. Along with William Hart Sr.n came son Bill Jr., who served on both Junior Staff and Senior Staff and went on to a distinguished career in philanthropy and Historic Preservation; Phil Hart who for many years served as Assistant Director to his father and was both the prime cheerleader for the Mowglis spirit, Mowglis song conductor, Iron fist of discipline and quiet friend to so many.

James' father Jim has, in the phrase of Akela to the wolves at the council rock "Has carried the spirit of Mowglis into roles as diverse as Cub Leader, Kitchen Chef, Maintenance man and Mowglis Director.

During Jim's early years on staff as head of maintenance at Mowglis, James spent his first summer, he refer's to as his "pre-Cub" summer, at Mowglis in 1993, at the ripe old age of 6. He remained a camper through his graduate year in 2000. With a hiatus in which he took some time off from Mowglis and in the employ of Uncle Sam as a firearms instructor, he returned to Mowglis in 2014 with new Director Nick Robbins. Today he is Mowglis' first Director of Alumni Relations and has taken the relationship between Mowglis and its Alumni to a whole new level with the complete support of Director Nick Robbins.

<itunes:image href="https://feeds.podetize.com/kgRYwTup8N.jpg"></itunes:image>

MowglisMemories 38 Chris Phaneuf

<itunes:duration>4436</itunes:duration>
<itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit>

Luckily for Mowglis, Chris Phaneuf's dad - a pediatric dentist in the Boston area - was the dentist to the Feuer Family back in the 1970s and through the enthusiasm of both the Feuer boys and their parents Mowglis came to his attention.

He was in the Den of 1972 with Frank Mauran, John Mulliken, Lincoln Gamble, Chris Smith and a host of Mowglis icons.

As a member of the staff he was assigned to the Cubs, after a few years in the kitchen on Jr. Staff with Chef Ashton "Smitty" Smith.

In the early-1990's Holt Elwell Memorial Foundation Treasurer Doug Warwick, who had kept Mowglis on a secure financial footing for many years, despite very limited resources, was looking for someone who would be up to the task and he approached Perry. This was a particularly difficult time for Mowglis. Recruitment had hit a wall, related largely to huge changes in society that were drawing families to send their children to specialty camps and some other unique challenges the camp faced in the final decade of century.

In addition to keeping Mowglis' financial balls in the air, Perry has been a tireless advocate for developing a strong financial aid and scholarship program to assure that Mowglis would continue to have a diverse group of boys from all income levels. His strong support in those years and since then has placed Mowglis on much more solid financial footing.

<itunes:image href="https://feeds.podetize.com/5rYMGBnhN.jpg"></itunes:image>

Ep 34 Mowglis Memories - Tim Coons - 2020

<itunes:duration>3670</itunes:duration>
<itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit>

Tim Coons came to Mowglis from his home in New York in 1965 along with his brother Henry. Some years later, Paul and Andy and Jim Boicourt would launch the beginnings of the rock climbing program at Mowglis.

Few Mowglis displayed more of a joy for life, both in camp and on the trail. That joy made him a favorite among the boys. His influence and the stories of his prowess and his hijinx have echoed down over the years. Oh the smiles, and frowns, that he brought to Mr. Hart's face in those years!

Paul may have missed his calling in life by not pursuing a career as a standup comic as witnessed by this interview. I guarantee you'll have a ball listening.

There are a lot of crew stories swapped by Mowglis around the campfire and lately on Zoom but few are more widely remembered than the crew race of 1973 when a very small Red Racing crew was pitted against a crew of the biggest boys that most of us had seen in the Den and Panther on the Blue Racing crew. It was the biggest upset that anyone could remember. But as always, the moment that the oar went up the flag pole it was over and the Mowglis brothers gathered arm in arm to sing the Mowglis boating song.

Jim Storie was the crew coach that year, his only year at Mowglis. Yet he is fondly remembered to this day and he has very fond memories himself of that summer. Jim came back to New Hampshire that same winter and was a part of the all Mowglis winter assault on Mt Washington. I've put some photos from that trip that Jim had on slides up on the shownotes page at MowglisMemories.blogspot.com .

In late January I stopped in Richmond on my cross country trip with my pal Boof the Siberian Husky and visited with Jim and his wife Nancy. We recorded this podcast over dinner before Boof and I hit the road headed home.

<itunes:image href="https://feeds.podetize.com/24mLuKQdnP.jpg"></itunes:image>

Ep 26 Andy Popinchalk Part 2

<itunes:duration>2594</itunes:duration>
<itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit>

Episode 26 Andy Popinchalk Part 2. David has lost only one trial in his legal career, his first, and he didn’t like it. He has not lost another trial since 1995.
David has spent a lifetime in and under the water. He started diving at the age of 14, first in a lake in New Hampshire, then in mud holes in western Pennsylvania, before graduating to the ocean and becoming a “New Jersey wreck diver” in the late 1980s. He explored lots of shipwrecks, but he never saw a fish from more than six inches away until he found his way to the Caymans in 1993. Since then, he has dived in clear water all over the world.
An avid explorer, David has sailed the Beagle Channel, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, dived 16,000 feet deep in the Bermuda Triangle, recovered artifacts from the Titanic, and led the expeditions that found and recovered the Apollo F-1 engines that launched men to the moon. He regularly advises clients on “the business of exploration” through his company, Explorer Consulting, LLC.

David is an expert in the legal issues affecting exploration, diving and technical diving. He has served as legal counsel to private salvors, scientists, governments, filmmakers, training agencies, explorers and equipment manufacturers. He has been General Counsel to a number of organizations, including The Explorers Club, X-Prize Foundation, Professional Shipwreck Explorers Association, Anglo-Danish Maritime Archaeology Team, Academy of Underwater Arts & Sciences, and the Rebreather Education & Safety Association. David’s law firm, Concannon & Charles, represents clients throughout the diving industry.

<itunes:image href="https://feeds.podetize.com/mqRmG6vKD-.jpg"></itunes:image>
