Marina describes what the word “embodied” means and why it is important. Rachel is on a photoshoot and submitted her questions ahead of time.

Marina’s definition of trauma is “too much, too fast, too soon for your body to take in and for your body to integrate”. Trauma can be defined as big “T” trauma which includes serious injury, violent crimes, and life-threatening events. LITTLE “t” TRAUMA CAN BE A LIFETIME OF EVENTS such as non-life-threatening injuries, emotional abuse, harassment, and living a lifestyle with too many demands and too few resources.

It is rare, as a human being in the modern world, that you wouldn’t at a certain time experience the results of trauma. When your body perceives a threat, the stress response options are fight, flight, freeze, or fawn (appease).

Women tend to be socialized from a young age to appease and have not been exposed to the concept that fawning is a survival strategy.

Another part of unintegrated trauma is how it negatively affects our ability to have clear boundaries. Three steps of reclaiming boundaries are first recognizing that you have boundaries, second that you can feel the boundaries in your body, and third that you can honor your boundaries. The third step is often the most difficult and takes time and self-compassion.

Many women experience numbness and this is related to trauma. Marina reminds the listeners that it isn’t a conscious choice to feel numb and it is a sensation. Clare hears from her clients that they feel “broken” because they feel numb. CAN WE BE CURIOUS ABOUT THE NUMBNESS? WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE? WHAT IS UNDERNEATH THE NUMBNESS? Noticing is being curious.

Often the numbness is there because underneath the numbness there is pain, fear, and despair. So the numbness has a protective quality. Accepting and loving that numbness honors it and helps it feel more protected. And then when we love and accept those numb pieces of us, we can open the door to more.

All of the hustle of a constant “go mode” is translated as trauma in our nervous system. Burnout is a kind of trauma. The paradigm shift is to slow down, feel yourself, feel your body, feel your emotions. This is called Embodiment.

Embodiment is the process of intentionally coming back to your body, befriending your body, and noticing what is happening in your body. Embodiment helps you understand the impulses of your body. It helps you feel safer to love, be in a stable relationship or express your sexuality in a way that is more authentic. It helps you to be more present and connected with the earth.

*Marina Nabão is a somatic healer & embodiment coach. Clare is recovering from CoVid, yet couldn’t ask her son to share his taco dinner or say yes to a client’s offer to pay for a massage package so she didn’t have to lose sleep over not working while she was sick. Rachel had a hard time accepting her husband’s offer to pick up their daughter from school or to do the laundry because she thinks she should be doing it, yet she has the flu.

Rachel has no idea where this inability to ask for help comes from and shares her relief in finding out years ago, in an online forum, that many mothers have had dark thoughts about how they can get hurt or be sick enough to have other people like nurses at a hospital take care of them, just so the moms don’t have to feel guilty for being taken care of. We agree that it’s messed up and we would love to change this.

We ask the question of why do so many women feel a lack of worth unless they are doing things for other people? Why is the foundation of our worth based on how we can serve others? No wonder we think that we don’t have permission to just rest and look after ourselves. AS WOMEN, WE DIDN’T GET THE MESSAGE, “IT’S OK/SAFE FOR ME TO REST AND NURTURE MYSELF”.

When Rachel hears Clare say this statement out loud, her body feels the truth of the statement and softens, but her head says, “NO”. This reaction and noticing it is called embodiment. The inner critic, who often lives in our heads, originally served a purpose to help keep us safe. Clare says that in order to balance out the negativity of the inner critic she was taught to create other inner empowering personalities to add balance and perspective. Her divine masculine personality was able to remind her that she was only sick for one week and that she could accept help from her client.

We ended the podcast by sharing some things that nourished us while we were sick. Rachel wore her soft “jammies” that Steven got her for Christmas, drank plenty of water, took hot showers, and put on music so she could give her body some gentle movement of swaying and stretching. Clare drank warm tea, journaled, and stated a new affirmation to herself while looking in the mirror.

Listen and enjoy! Shafonne is a multi-passionate coach, entrepreneur, and influencer who started Pretty Pear Bride; a magazine for plus-size brides.

Our show talks about how conditioned self-judgment blocks love, intimacy, and business success. We acknowledge that reclaiming self-worth isn’t a job that you do once and then you are finished. LEARNING TO CARE LESS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE’S JUDGMENT OF YOU, ALLOWS YOU TO CARE FOR YOURSELF AND OTHER PEOPLE MORE.

Shafonne has found that no matter where she is and no matter what topic she is speaking on, she becomes an inspiration to women who are afraid to take up space. Rachel shares her feelings about her own big body. There’s new confidence during sex but she’s experienced a block about being fat as a business owner and how she’s afraid of the misconceptions or judgments of others as she works.

The entrepreneurial space is often where people are confronted with the next thing in their self-development that they need to work on.

Rachel tells us about an appointment she had earlier in the day with a plus-size client who's part of her project with 40 women over the age of 40. To see more go to Rachel’s Instagram @rachel_shootsweet.

The client warned Rachel that she just wouldn’t like any of the photos, she never likes photos of herself, but as they looked at the images of her on the beach at sunrise she loved them all! She felt powerful, proud, and beautiful.

THE IMPORTANT THING IS NOT ACTUALLY WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE, IT’S HOW YOU FEEL. When you feel happy you shine and that’s what comes through. Nothing had changed physically for these photos more than the other photos she’d had taken. THE THING THAT CHANGED IS HER PERSPECTIVE.

Clare gets the conversation heading to the good stuff - sex! And we all discuss how anybody's insecurities- size, age, scars, the list goes on - can hold us back from enjoyment. But what we all need is to remove judgment from the bedroom. REMOVING JUDGMENT OF OURSELVES ALLOWS US TO ENJOY MORE PLEASURE AND REASSURES OUR PARTNERS THAT WE’RE NOT JUDGING THEM.

Our message for any woman listening is: Show up in your life. Show up in your love life and take up space. It was only after Shafonne started sharing photos of herself that her business really blossomed. That’s the beauty of accepting yourself, it affects everything, even your business. When you feel good about yourself it will skyrocket your business AND your life.

You can find Shafonne at :

https://prettypearbride.com/

https://www.instagram.com/prettypearbride/

To get more info and sign up for our June 9-11, 2022 EPIC Workshops in Edinburgh, Scotland: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/epic-embodiment-pleasure-retreat-day-with-permission-to-be-enchanting-tickets-348636359737?aff=odcleoeventsincollection

Listen and enjoy! Many of the self-pleasure practices and exercises she learned in her coaching program helped her to be fully present and lean into the uncomfortable sensations. Her doula reminded her THAT HER SURGES ARE STRONG BECAUSE HER BODY IS STRONG.

Clare notices the similarity of riding a wave of a birthing contraction to riding a wave of an orgasm. It isn't helpful to clench and fight the contraction. It is better to surrender to it.

Savannah leaned into the sensations and let them expand through her body. She also had the mindset shift, “this is not happening to me, MY BODY IS DOING THIS FOR ME.”

Savannah’s coaching focuses on helping couples build communication skills before the baby arrives. It’s easier to get your sexy back when you have support in the postpartum phase.

Rachel’s libido went up after her first child. She thinks because of the difficulties of the birth, her opinion of her body changed after that birth to “Look what I just did?! My body is awesome. Clare invites you to view orgasm and pleasure in the same way we enjoy tasting a variety of food prepared using different cooking methods. The theme of learning to relax and surrender your body and mind is the common denominator for experiencing epic orgasms.

Highlights:

Rachel experienced a wonderful G-spot orgasm after she had a clitoral orgasm and remembered Clare’s question from weeks ago, “What would happen if you didn’t stop?” So this time she didn’t stop after her first orgasm and it made a huge difference.

The second orgasm felt incredible, yet different because it wasn't familiar and new things can feel scary or unsafe. After the G-spot orgasm, she could feel herself begin to tense up against the building of a strong sensation. She told herself out loud to “relax and let go” and then she cried AND it felt really good.

Clare mentions that crying is common after an intense orgasm, which is a release for your body to let go of other stress or trauma that is stored in the tissues (see reference below regarding author of the book: The Body Keeps The Score). She also asks how Rachel would describe her experience and Rachel uses the word Transcendent as she completely surrenders her body to herself and to her husband Steve.

Before Clare learned to have multiple orgasms, she would roll into a ball, like a roly-poly bug thinking she could keep the good feeling inside of her body longer. Her lover suggested that she try relaxing her body to let the good feeling travel through her. That suggestion helped Clare learn to have multiple and more intense orgasms.

Rachel mentions that it took time for her to experience her first orgasm for a couple of reasons. She and her husband were virgins when they got married and their religious sex education didn’t include education about orgasms. Even after her husband’s dedication to Rachel experiencing an orgasm, which involved books and a visit to the sex shop for toys, she realized she was clenching against the feeling of surrender. She learned to have her orgasm when she relaxed.

How you approach sex can be similar to how you approach life. Can you surrender to the flow of life or are you someone who is trying to control it. Rachel suggests a mantra for the listeners: “Surrender and it will be awesome”. She added that it’s also ok not to chase the orgasm as the one goal for pleasure. Instead, just enjoy all the experiences as they happen. Clare suggests slowing down and breathing together as a way to connect and get out of your head and into your body. Clare likes the yab yum position used in Tantra for slowing down (see link below for example of the Yab yum position).

Clare talked about first having a meditation with her body with one hand over her heart and one hand resting on her vulva for ten minutes. Then she would ask permission from her body regarding penetration. Many women have never been taught to ask their own bodies regarding consent. Rachel’s mind was blown by this concept.

This episode shows how both Clare and Rachel are leaning into new ways to experience pleasure.

Link to the author of The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk https://www.besselvanderkolk.com

Easy to watch a six-minute video that explains an overview of how the body keeps score of past trauma The Body Keeps the Score

Link to photos of Yab yum position for slowing down and breathing with your partner https://www.huffpost.com/entry/this-sex-position-is-practically-made-for-valentines-day_l_5c59e3e4e4b00187b555a997

Picture of a Roly-Poly Bug aka Pill Bug https://www.reconnectwithnature.org/news-events/the-buzz/roly-poly-pill-bugs

To get info and sign up for our June 9-11, 2022 EPIC Workshops in Edinburgh, Scotland: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/epic-embodiment-pleasure-retreat-day-with-permission-to-be-enchanting-tickets-348636359737?aff=odcleoeventsincollection

Listen and enjoy! She teaches us that through our thoughts, in the way we react to our emotions, and by our actions, we can become more loving, more compassionate people; first for ourselves and then for everyone else.

Self-compassion includes treating ourselves with compassion when things are difficult and deeply appreciating the good in ourselves. Contrary to what some may think, self-compassion also leads to greater compassion for others.

Dr. Liz talks about “Compare Despair” when Rachel shares a feeling of competition that she grew up with, pitting herself against her friends and always feeling like there was someone who was better at everything than she was.

Our wellbeing doesn’t come from being perfect or the best, our wellbeing comes from just being our authentic self and living according to our values.

The more you own who you are, the happier you will feel. Because you are irreplaceable.

The great news is that self-compassion involves skills that we can practice. In our thoughts, how we handle our emotions, and our actions.

Research shows that the three biggest drivers of unhappiness are self-criticism, shame, and perfectionism.

We can create new neural pathways by repeating to ourselves loving and kind phrases. And the amazing thing is that we don’t even need to believe those phrases at first! Clare shared a wonderful thought that she practices with her coaching clients – “I deserve love”.

In order to overcome perfectionism, Dr. Liz has learned to say “Done is better than perfect” which Clare and Rachel definitely understand as they start out this podcast journey! And doing things imperfectly gives silent permission to others to just go for it and try, even if it’s not completely right yet.

You can find Dr. Liz here. http://drlizmaloney.com

The world covets an eternal Spring and Summer for our sexual season. It is what most romantic movies portray. But nature and relationships can’t live in perpetual Spring and Summer.

Human bodies, like plants and animals, live in cycles and require a season of rest in order to experience the next healthy Spring. Women need permission to embrace the sexual season of Winter as a time to go within, heal, rest, and focus on themselves without feeling shame.

Rachel believes that the season of Winter has beauty in its darkness and quiet.

The Celtic/Pagen tradition of Yule including Winter Solstice has been celebrated from as early as the neolithic period, which is the end of the Stone Age (10,000 BC) from historical digs and artifacts.

It is the tradition of Yule to bring greenery into your house (pine, Ivy, Holly, Mistletoe). On Winter Solstice you hang mistletoe above your front door to protect your family from misfortune AND above your bed to bring fertility (that’s more than kissing under the mistletoe!).

Holly represents the male and Ivy represented the female and the Holly and Ivy are weaved together to make the wreath.

Even though it is the longest night of the year, Winter Solstice is the tipping point where the Earth turns back towards the sun and the light returns. The sun is reborn. The Son is reborn.

Light is brought into the home and our hearts when the tree is lit, with candle lighting, and you're thinking about what you want to bring in the coming year. Trees are decorated with nuts and coins for prosperity.

Winter Sexual Season = Rest, a break from sex, and focus internally on self.

Autumn Sexual Season = Integration/healing, appreciating and/or grieving. Letting go of what is no longer needed.

Sex can be nourishing if it isn’t a performative act. Clare works with couples to take away the goal of orgasm during sexual play. This can lead to more creativity and less chance of going into autopilot during sex.

Autopilot does not equal mind-blowing sex.

The book by Emily Nagoski, Come As You Are, suggests telling your partner how long they could expect that you need a break from sex…. one month to a few months. It's about communicating your needs to your partner.

Rachel says that it's a gift to your partner to communicate and then they know what is going on.

Practically all women raise their hands (in workshops that Clare has attended) when asked if there were times when they had sex in their romantic relationship but really didn’t want to.

The definition of a sexless marriage is sex less than once per month or less than ten times per year. (Studies range from 15-30% of married couples are sexless).

Sex and intimacy are not the same things. There are intimacy exercises in Tantra called eye gazing and placing a hand over your partner’s heart while breathing together that can bring tears to participants because of the intimacy it creates.

Rachel was reminded of a time she was craving intimacy with her husband and she thought it was sexual, but in reality, it was their 15 minute daily walks outside, holding hands, and her being quiet, so Steven could talk, that filled her intimacy love bucket.

With the release of his book, Dan is celebrating his 30 years as a sex advice columnist providing sex-positive advice. It inspired Clare to think about some of her favorite orgasms and a fun way for listeners to remember them… Orgasms A to G.
