Dr. Emily Rothstein founded and operated the Animal Allergy and Dermatology Service of Connecticut for 25 years, until her retirement in 2022. Although she has retired from clinical work, she is actively involved with many aspects of veterinary dermatology, including consultations with VESPECON (Veterinary Specialty Consultants), serving on the Advisory Board of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology, Secretary of World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology 2024, and the Administrative Committee of the World Association for Veterinary Dermatology. Wanting to give back to Connecticut’s pets and their owners, Dr. Rothstein started her volunteer work with the CVMA Continuing Education Committee in 2022 and the CVMF Companions in Crisis (CIC) in 2023, where she serves as liaison. She lives with her husband and their three medically-released Labrador retrievers. Besides spending free time with her fur family, she enjoys hiking, gardening, and cooking, recently adding bread baking to her repertoire.

Barbara joined Animal Cancer Foundation as Executive Director in 2009 because the mission to unite pet and human cancer research resonated with me. As a decade long volunteer with golden retriever rescue, I had witnessed how many dogs were fighting the same cancers that friends and family had also contracted. I was amazed at the information veterinary oncologists had acquired in their care for our pets that wasn’t being tapped by oncology research for people. I want to change that so that both pets and people benefit from the breakthroughs of collaborative research.

Dr. Letosky is a general practitioner at the Avon Lake Animal Clinic, and has been a part of the team since 1996. She has special interests in ultrasonography, and obtained her certification in this field through the University of Illinois Executive Veterinary Program. Dr. Anna Van Heeckeren has always loved animals. She grew up surrounded by dogs, cats, horses, a donkey, a goat, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, and even llamas. Naturally, she wanted to become a veterinarian.

Dr. Anna first attended the University of Michigan. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology there. Later, she earned a master's of science degree (MS) in molecular genetics and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from The Ohio State University.

Over the years, Dr. Anna has volunteered at many animal nonprofits. The most prominent was the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. In 2008, she founded One Health Organization. Her dream was (and still is) to benefit the whole community by keeping animals healthy.

When she's not busy being the President and CEO, Dr. Anna spends time with her husband and cat named Pearl (with Pearl's permission). She is the proud mom of two young women.

With 20 years of experience in international development, predominantly in Russian-speaking countries, Shana’s passion for advocacy extends to the welfare of animals, particularly cats.

When the conflict in Ukraine erupted in 2022, Shana witnessed the heartbreaking plight of families forced to flee, leaving behind their beloved pets. Motivated by compassion, she became involved with Breaking the Chains International, a British organization dedicated to providing aid to animals in crisis. Shana’s efforts have resulted in the rescue of 50 cats from Ukraine, with plans to bring back 14 more on her next trip.

Katherine Velez received her B.A. in HDFS with a minor in Women Studies in Spring of 2010. She was involved in Zero Tolerance, a student activities organization and participated in the production of The Vagina Monologues. During her time at UCONN, she completed an internship at St. Luke’s Lifeworks (now Inspirica), working at their women’s shelter. She also participated in a mentorship program with middle school children through the Stamford Public Education Foundation. This experience helped cement her interest in working with vulnerable populations and encouraged her to think about plans for after graduation. Her advisor, Dr. Annamaria Csizmadia, and professors were integral and supportive of her decision to pursue a social work master’s degree.

After graduation, Katherine earned her master’s in social work with a clinical concentration from Fordham University. During her time at Fordham, she started working as a case worker at a local nonprofit, Person to Person, providing emergency assistance programs part time. She completed an internship with the White Plains Youth Bureau where she developed an after-work program for at risk youth in an immigrant community. She also completed her clinical internship at Norwalk Community Health Center where she provided individual psychotherapy to clinic patients. Upon completing her MSW, she started working full time for Person to Person and was promoted to Case Work Manager as the organization grew and branched out to a bigger catchment area.

In 2016, Katherine began working as a Research Coordinator at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in the Pediatrics Department. She had the privilege of working in several clinical trials within her department, including working with mothers and children in the NICU at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and running mother-child groups in preschool settings. At CUMC, she earned the required hours toward her clinical license and is now a fully licensed social worker in the state of CT.

Today, Katherine is the Veterinary Social Worker at Cornell Veterinary Specialists in Stamford CT where she works with clients and supports staff in the day-to-day human issues that arise within the veterinary field and the human-animal bond. She is also in private practice.

Katherine’s time at UConn helped her realize her goals of becoming a social worker. The staff and professors she met along the way forever impacted her life and the trajectory of it. It is because of these relationships that she was able to succeed and was prepared to pursue a master’s degree. She will forever hold the UConn community in her heart and is grateful for her time in the HDFS program.

Dr. Rustin M. Moore, professor and the Ruth Stanton Chair in Veterinary Medicine is the

11th dean of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has served in

this role since September 2015.

A two-time graduate of the college, Dr. Moore returned to the college in 2006 and has

served as the chair of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, executive director

of the Veterinary Medical Center, associate dean for Clinical and Outreach Programs,

and associate executive dean.

He has taught at all levels of the undergraduate, professional and graduate curricula,

both at Ohio State and at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he served on the

LSU faculty from 1994 to 2006. He has served as an advisor, co-advisor or committee

member for 21 doctoral or master’s students, as well as the clinical advisor for more

than 25 interns and residents.

He has published more than 120 peer/editor reviewed manuscripts; nearly 20 book

chapters; and presented/published greater than 175 scientific abstracts, over 100

continuing education lectures/conference proceedings, and more than 100 outreach and

professional presentations.

A native of Spencer, WV, he earned a BS degree (1986), summa cum laude, from the

West Virginia University; a DVM (1989), summa cum laude, and a PhD (1994) from The

Ohio State University. In addition, he is a diplomate of the American College of

Veterinary Surgeons.

He serves on boards and in other roles for several organizations including the

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, the Ohio Wildlife Center, Ohio Veterinary Medical

Association, American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, American

Association of Equine Practitioners, and Diversify Veterinary Medicine Coalition, among

Others.

Dr. Padgett grew up in northwest Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University for both his undergraduate studies and his veterinary degree (making him a true Buckeye). After graduation from veterinary school, he spent a year of intensive training at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Following this, he pursued a surgical residency at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. During the 3-year surgical residency, he also obtained his Master’s degree. After practicing in Massachusetts for 3 years, he then came back to Ohio in 2000 and established the surgical practice at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital.

Since then, he has been able to focus his professional energy on specializing in soft tissue surgery, with an emphasis on cancer treatment, minimally invasive techniques, and respiratory disease. He is proud of the educational program at MVH, where many doctors, in multiple specialties have received advanced training and gone on to achieve board certification. When not working on patients, or teaching, he is happy to spend time with family, or on a sailboat!

Dr. Lash has been with the APL for 15 years. She oversees the medical and surgical care of the more than 14,000 animals a year that come to the APL each year for placement or other assistance. More recently, she was integral in opening the Community Pet Clinic at the APL. This clinic provides access to veterinary care to animals owned by people with limited resources.

Dr Lash is on the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association Board of Directors, is Chair of the Shelter Education Committee for the Midwest Veterinary Conference, and teaches the Veterinary and Husbandry portion of the Ohio Humane Agent Training Program.

About Golden Treasures Rescue

In 2004, after many years in rescue, two dedicated golden lovers founded Golden Treasures Golden Retriever Rescue. Sandy and April knew that, due to the popularity of the breed, there were more than enough needy golden's and golden mixes who could benefit from their expertise in the rescue world. Thus, this new charitable, nonprofit became a reality.

Since its formation, Golden Treasures has been the result of the efforts of many volunteers, most of whom are still helping today. There are no paid employees. All of Golden Treasures’ volunteers are working around jobs and families, helping find new homes for displaced or unwanted golden's.

Golden Treasures enjoys a great reputation as a caring, professionally run, reputable breed-specific rescue. Shelters and vets are quick to call on us to help with dogs that need help or to recommend us to their clients. The dogs are our No. 1 priority. Since 2004, Golden Treasures has provided services to more than 500 golden's.

Our operations today are the result of refined and more efficient policies and procedures that were in place from its inception. Based on experience, we’ve been able to make changes that we feel help to find that perfect home for every one of our dogs.

Challenges continue, but the reward of knowing that we’ve helped dogs and families alike come together, makes it all worthwhile.

GOLDEN TREASURES GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE, INC. has been organized for the purpose of removing Golden retrievers from unwanted and inappropriate homes and also from shelters; educating the public about responsible dog ownership, providing a resource for canine owners regarding the proper care and treatment of their dogs; educating the public about the breed and the need for obedience lessons for all dogs; encouraging, assisting and providing guidelines to other purebred fanciers to form rescue programs; and to provide an alternative to euthanization.

Following graduation, Linda worked in a variety of human medical settings, including Jefferson Medical College, Metropolitan General Hospital, and Veterans Administrations Hospital in Wade Park.  In 1980 she began working in veterinary hospitals in Rochester, NY. She became a diplomat for the ABVP in Feline practice in 1997.

Schoenberg opened Just Cats Hospital in South Euclid in 1988 after having spent 8 years in companion animal practice in University Heights. She retired in 2016 and sold her practice to Dr. Jessi Pizzuli. She served as president of the Cleveland Academy from 1983 to 1984 and from 2008 to 2009.

The main areas that CBD has scientifically been shown to be beneficial for is reducing, pain and, increasing movement in dogs with osteoarthritis. Much like in people, CBD has been shown in studies to reduce frequency of seizures in dogs.

There's increasing work now in the area of anxiety and the results have been mixed. But what they have found, in a recent study, is as long as you get a significant amount of CBD, into the pet, it can also be beneficial in reducing anxiety as well. 

And so some vets may be up to speed on where it can be used and when it can be used, and a lot of other ones may not be, or may be fearful to even recommend it because of potential legal implications because it's not a pharmaceutically approved medicine at this point, except for there's one approved.

Jeffrey Powers, DVM, Practice Owner

Caring for animals has been always been a way of life for Dr. Powers. Ever since he was a child he has always had a deep love for all animals. That is why, it wasn’t a surprise when he decided that he wanted to become a veterinarian.

Dr. Powers decided to follow in his oldest sister’s footsteps who is in the health professions field as well. Dr. Powers graduated from Michigan State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science with High Honors, and in 1980 from Michigan State University with a DVM degree with Honors. At the age of 23, he worked under the guidance of Dr. Robert Johnson in Yale, Michigan. He soon established his own practice in 1980, where he would work out of a one room office and would drive the country roads of the thumb of Michigan from farm to farm.

Dr. Powers is the founder and owner of Beaver Island Veterinary Services and the owner of  Jordan Valley Animal Clinic, providing mixed animal veterinary services to the community of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan and East Jordan Michigan. He is also the founder and former owner of South Sanilac Veterinary Hospital in Peck, Michigan. He continues to care for all animals large or small which explains why his customers often describe him as very caring, sensitive and compassionate in the care of their animals.
